New Zealander: a trip down under through the Alameda Tube. The East Bay is known for its diverse ethnic cuisine. I was with my friend, Leslie, earlier this year when we stumbled upon a place called The New Zealander on the corner of Webster and Central in Alameda.
For an appetizer, we tried the Welsh Rarebit, a warm cheese dip made of English cheddar, Stilton, and Smithwick's Ale. The tang of the blue cheese and the sharpness of the cheddar made for an incredible combination. Your favorite cheese dip will never taste the same after you try this dish. And forget ever wanting nachos with that fake cheese again. Ruined.
Tuck Shop's principal selling point is their pies; meat pies, "chook pies" (chicken, ham, leeks in white gravy), lamb shanks slow cooker easy and vege pie, vegetable pie, Thai green chook curry pie, and the Guinness steak and mushroom pie, as their principal foods. They also have daily specials, rolls, sangers (sandwiches) salads, sides, and dessert. Moreover they serve breakfast at Tuck Shop, "the Aussie way with locally raised/organic eggs." While I hope there are no egg farms in the East Village, I might not put it past neighboring Chinatown.
The first particular person to appear to when you are trying to find new chicken recipes is your mother. Each mother - or father, if he was once the one that cooked for your circle of relatives - has no less than one chicken recipe that she cherishes mainly else. For my mom, it was once her chicken lamb curry. It was once completely delicious. It had rooster, lettuce, tomatoes, lots of turmeric, and of course a highly spiced curry sauce. She taught it to me when I went off to school, and I've been cooking it ever since. It is a mainstay of my diet.
